Under Floor Air and Service Distribution Offer Unique Flexibility and Energy Savings


Tate Access Floors, Inc. bolstered Cornell University’s efforts at the 2007 Solar Decathlon with the donation of raised access flooring systems that were used in the design and construction of the Cornell’s solarpowered home. Incorporating raised access floors allowed for significant adjustments to be made to wiring and ventilation systems without the need for altering walls or other key support structures. The result was a more sustainable, energy efficient home, and Cornell’s team being selected as one of the 20 participating teams this year.

“We are extremely proud to have played a small part in this effort by the Cornell University team,” said Scott Alwine, marketing manager for Tate Access Floors. “It came up with a design for an 800 sq.ft. structure that incorporates remarkable flexibility and one that can accommodate numerous uses for the homeowner. The unique application of raised access floors in residential use was a very creative touch.”

Raised access floors are frequently used as part of commercial and industrial buildings that include a system design which delivers HVAC, electrical power, voice, data cabling and other services all beneath an accessible, modular floor.
